New Pc Time

Postby King » Sun Aug 29, 2010 11:14:13

So i've been looking at getting a new pc. Needs to be fairly decent but not stupidly over the top when it comes to cost. So my thoughts so far are: (note if the links are in german there is a flag on the top right)

mobo: ASUS RAMPAGE III EXTREME, Sockel 1366, ATX, DDR3 (http://www1.atelco.de/articledetail.jsp ... &agid=1191)

cpu: Intel Core i7-930 Box 8192Kb, LGA1366 (http://www1.atelco.de/articledetail.jsp ... &agid=1189)

ram: 6GB-Triple-Kit Corsair TR3X6G1600C8D DDR3, CL8 (http://www3.atelco.de/articledetail.jsp ... &agid=1193)

ssd: Crucial RealSSD C300 128GB Retail (http://www1.atelco.de/articledetail.jsp ... &agid=1145)

optical: LG BH10LS30 Blu-Ray Brenner bulk (http://www1.atelco.de/articledetail.jsp ... 1&agid=856)

gfx: (I have a GTX260 OC2 from BFG Tech so that might be ok for now)

sfx: ASUS Xonar D2X, PCIe x1 (http://www4.atelco.de/articledetail.jsp ... 3&agid=767)

speakers: Logitech Z-5500 Digital 5.1 System (http://www1.atelco.de/articledetail.jsp ... 3&agid=771) - currently an optional extra.

Atm I'd go with the 460 it's at that sweet spot in price/performance ratio. I've also seen quite a few 465's at alsmost the same price as the 460 so I'd look around for a good deal. Tho you could just keep the 260 for a bit longer and wait for the next generation of DirectX 11 cards.

Rest looks good imho. ^_^
Also I'd invest in a proper PSU also, if you don't got one already. ;d

got an 850W BeQuiet DarkPower or something. Its <3 so PSU is fine. I think i probably will hold on to the gfx card for now having just had a quick look around. waiting for the DX11 mainstream lot to come out will result in cheaper for more performance i suspect. Speaking to Ed earlier i'll probably go for 8GB of ram rather than 12GB, can always get more later, with 6 slots on the board using only 4 means its easy to expand ^^

Sound card is the only thing i'm nots ure about atm then. If i get those speakers, they seem to be pretty damn good. I got a previous generation analogue set from like 2000 and they're still going pretty strong, i'd just want something digital now i guess.

6BG of tripple channel DDR3 would probably be a better bet. ;d
A xonar card would be a good investment for sure. You got the Logitech Z-5400?

Alrighty.

Looks like the best SSD kicking about... but, any reason for getting a 128GB? I just got a 64GB and then install any space hungry games on a second disk... Performance hit isn't really noticeable for games and it means you don't have to cough up a ludicrous amount for space which isn't system critical? Currently mine's sitting at 20GB free after Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and all the other shite like Firefox/Office etc. etc.

Might be worth getting a 3rd party CPU cooler? One which blows down through the CPU heatsink and the across the mobo would be good. I melted two Asus P5N32-E's because the motherboard heatsinks wern't getting any air over them. Something like this maybe?

Make sure you have the right motherboard slots for the soundcard - doesn't look like it has any PCI-E x1 slots which a lot of sound cards are these days.

Don't know how fussed you are about sound levels but one of the best buys of my newest PC was this case:

Can't hear the PC at all during movies etc. which really used to fuck me off with my old PC. Can hear it more noticeably when gaming but still much better than most. The air filters and everything keep the inside spotless as well so you don't need to worry about dusting it out every month. Plus it's sleek as fuck.

I've got an Asus Xonar D2X just now - can't fault it at all.

Graphics wise, not too clued up at the moment. My 2 GTX 260 OC Maxcores are handling anything I've played lately with no issues yet (except lagfest Battlefield 2). Maybe get a second and SLi it seen as you have the motherboard for it.

The motherboard is a good choice. It has a decent sound card with it, so investing for an additional is unnecessary.

I've not upgraded my pc since I left Germany, and living in the UK it won't be cheap to run a pc set up like that. The graphic card is pretty good, I bought an XFX GTX260 OC and it doesn't break a sweat on any of the modern games I played.

Good spec, I'd say good for it.
