New system TIEM!!!

Postby f1xxx3r » Thu Nov 12, 2015 13:35:01

Hey guys!
Being invited into Overwatch beta and all... hahaha jk fu blizz
I think it's time to retire my trusty bluescreen free OCed q9650 ddr2 setup :D It served me well all these years.

The list at the bottom of the post is what I'm aiming for, if all goes well I'll get it by the start of December.
I can't find the PSU on PCPP, I'm gonna be buying a Sirtec 750w one, it's a german manufacturer that I've been using for almost 10 years and their PSU's are stellar (especially for the price).
Shit that I will buy later: HDD -> 1440p 144hz monitor -> water cooling kit

My main issue with this build is the GPU.
Basically it's 980ti vs fury x. They cost exactly the same here.
980ti is slightly faster over all but like I said earlier I plan on buying a 144hz monitor in the near future and G-Sync(nvidia) monitors are much much more expensive compared to Freesync(amd) ones.
Also the fury x is using newer dx12 tech and needs to "come into it's own" in the near future with driver updates (like all amd cards).
I know most of you (like all of reddit/pcpp/internet basically) greatly favor nvidia but keep in mind i'm on my 4th amd gpu in the past 8 years and i have had absolutely 0 issues with them while running it in a shitty, overclocked, dusty enviroment. That's right! No bluescreens, driver crashes or RMA's. So please try to be objective on this :D

On the other hand I could just say fuck it, stay on my old samsung monitor and just buy a 970 and upgrade the GPU + Monitor later on.

I know Boorz and Jonnie (and possible Rza) were planning on upgrading also so....
Let the future proofings begin!

All suggestions are welcome!

On top of all this i'm gonna be sorting out a NAS for the ridiculous amount of anime I've managed to get hold of, so need a enclosure for that and probably look into getting 4x 4/6TB drives for that. Might even forgo the drives I was planning for this system and just go for that. Only really wanted them for the 2 spaces the case provides in the front for them =D

Here's the thing Boorz...
I wanted to go HAM and just buy the best/fastest in each category but I've reached a couple of conclusions:
1) How is the i7 worth 50% more money compared to the i5. They are both quad cores and in games the function basically the same. I am only talking about games here, I don't plan to do much else on my new pc
2) 980ti. I can buy the msi lightning one, it's the fastest single gpu card on the market right now, but considering Pascal (and maybe the amd counterpart) launching in q1 2016 I'm afraid it's going to be outclassed by a cheaper and newer chipset, like what happened to the titan x and 980ti, basically losing a shitload of value in just a few months. If you get a 970-the value "lost" is much much smaller. Basically all the review sites say that yeah the 980ti is a beast but also .. "it's not worth it".
All these things combined with the fact I'm abandoning my 1440p 144hz monitor idea and just sticking to 1080p for gaming kinda made my shy away from the enthusiast category and just go for the reasonable setup (i5 + factory oc'ed 970) and with the leftover money get a new iphone as well :))
Also, there's the x99 platform. 6 cores for about the same money, more pci lanes, quad channel ddr and SIX CORES! Yeah it's slightly slower per core compared to skylake but 6>4 and dx12 is supposed to leverage multigpu and hyper threading properly in the near future.
What are your thoughts on all of this?

Still have some time to make my decision so might as well not jump in headfirst throwing money left and right :))

LE: Thought about it again, 980ti it is :)))

You had 980ti on your list which is why i never mentioned anything =P

I basically picked everything i though would still be going to be decent in about 10 years time. My current PC is 7 years old now, I've replaced the RAM and GPU and its still going strong despite its age so basically want another pc that will last me. With me only have the 1st gen i7 i miss out on all the improvements that came with the later gen processors so i thought i might aswell go for the straight swap from 1st to 4th? (i totally lose track of what generation these things are on now =P)

Also just got this on my email http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/Asus+Z170-K+SKYLAKE+Motherboard+%2B+Intel+6600K+CPU+%2B+16GB+Corsair+DDR4+%2B+FREE+Case+Fan%21+?productId=65242 worth a look if you are just wanting an i5, its a pretty decent mobo and corsiar ram is always good. Its a bit slower than the one you picked but for the price of that bundle i wouldn't miss the opportunity. I would keep an eye on this site they usually have some really decent deals going on every week. They were selling the GPU you have in your list for £390 a couple of weeks ago

Thing is, I only used pc partpicker to give you a list of stuff that I'm buying. I can't buy stuff from the uk, I'm going to get everything from Romania.
I changed even more things around than the list I posted but I guess I'll decide on the final configuration 2 weeks from now on black friday.

I guess the core concept is decently priced 980ti + i5 6600k + mb that can OC the i5 + modular case that can support water cooling is the perfomance/price ratio sweetspot for me.

What I can say though, the last couple of days trying to figure out what to buy have been a massive headache!

There's a hint in the name. :p 6th Gen.

I upgrade my PC in April 2014 so not looking for anything just yet. Though the talk is tempting I don't think I can justify another 2k spend that quickly :D

the recent drivers have made the fury x outperform the 980 ti in high resolution. But the 980 ti is simply a better card and will outperform the fury when overclocked. But i would not pay the price premium for either of them and would go with like a 970 and just upgrade sooner.

It outperforms a reference 980ti.
Prices here in Romania:
- gygabyte 970 g1 gaming - 405EUR
- gygabyte 980 ti g1 gaming - 765EUR

980ti is at least 85% of the peformance of 970sli (when sli works lol) at less money.
And another thing, almost all the AMD cards are better value for money compared to the nvidia counterparts. the 390 (also from gygabyte) is 30eur cheaper than the 970 0o. From nvidia's lineup only the 980ti is actually better value compared to AMD.

Fuck you Jupsik, I thoght I had my mind made up on that 980, now considering I don't even have a 144hz monitor yet I'm starting to lean back to the 970/390.
I guess if I get some crazy deal in 2 weeks on a 980ti or some shit I'll get that otherwise I'll go with the cheaper option.
I don't even play demanding single player games all that much tbh, mostly hots, this "overwatch" thing that I heard is coming, tf2 and maybe cs:go.
How much do I want 140+fps vs how much do I want a new phone ?
